UNITED WIN IN IRELAND

Montgomery on the Mark

Although fielding a team which included several reserves, Leeds United proved too strong for Distillery in the first match of their tour of Northern Ireland at Grosvenor Park, Belfast, last night, and won by three clear goals. United took up the attack from the start, but Monaghan relieved the pressure and transferred play to the other end, where Ferguson almost beat Twomey with a long shot. United again attacked, and after 10 minutes Henry, following a pass by Cochrane, gave them the lead. The Distillery forwards tried hard but were well held by a sound defence, and United did most of the attacking, Cochrane, Henry and Montgomery combining splendidly. K. McKean kept goal brilliantly for Distillery, however, and United could not add to their lead before the interval. Gadsby was prominent for United early in the second half with some fine clearances, and the Leeds half-back line showed up well in checking the advances of the home forwards. United's second goal was scored by Montgomery, the 16-years-old Irish youth signed on a fortnight ago from Portadown. A few minutes later Montgomery added the third goal after a hard drive by Henry had struck the crossbar. In the closing stages Slater and Hay failed with penalties for Distillery. United meet Newry Town at Newry to-day. DISTILLERY: McKean; Monaghan, McCune; Scott, Gray, Magill; Kirby, Slater, Ferguson, Bradford, Hay.
